DIALECTS AND LOCAL LANGUAGE OF GOZO
Visitors to Malta and Gozo are frequently taken aback by the Maltese language and strange location names. While some of the letters in our alphabet are comparable to those found in several European languages, we do have certain distinct letters and pronunciations.
This is due to the Maltese language’s historic and multicultural heritage. It is thought to be based on a dialect of Arabic spoken in Sicily and Malta between the 9th and 14th centuries. Sicily finally embraced Italian, whereas the language of Malta evolved into Maltese.
Let us begin with Gozo itself to give you a flavor. Gozo is spelled Gawdex and pronounced Awdessh in Maltese. This is because the G is silent and the x is pronounced shh. Remember to say Arb and Shhara when asking for directions to the villages of Garb or Xagra.
