BEST THINGS TO DO IN GOZO, MALTA

gozo

GOZO’S TOP ATTRACTIONS

Gozo is Malta’s charming, unexplored younger sibling. The wild and natural island is the ideal place to stay while travelling because it’s closer to the mainland of Malta but more distant, tranquil, and laid-back. You can anticipate seeing lush hills, turquoise-fringed ponds, limestone cliffs, and expansive vistas whether you’re there for a day trip or a longer holiday. Even some of the oldest historical sites will be visible to you! Enjoy all of Gozo’s finest attractions in Malta.

The northernmost island in the archipelago, Gozo, is the second largest. Despite being further away, Gozo still has a tonne to offer, especially for beach lovers since several of its beaches are among the best in the region!

1. VICTORIA (Rabat)

Victoria is a stunning fortified city with old, winding streets, cathedrals with red roofs, lovely gardens, and old limestone homes. The famed Citadel, an old stronghold perched atop a hill, is the main draw of Victoria.

GOZO

The remnants of an old jail (covered in graffiti from the inmates), museums, and mediaeval homes may all be seen inside the Citadel. Spectacular views of the sea and quiet fields may be seen from the Citadel.

Explore Victoria’s confusing network of streets outside the Citadel. Pick a direction and enjoy exploring the area while stumbling onto lovely squares. Take in the lively ambiance while enjoying Pastizzi with the locals.

2. RAMLA BAY, GOZO

The best beach on the island, Ramla Bay (Ir Ramla il Hamla), is renowned for its cliffs and red sand beach. People who like to swim in the quiet shallows and snorkel in the clear, blue water frequent this beach because it is one of the few ones on the island that has sand. Go to one of the island’s most well-known caverns on the eastern side of the bay if you’re interested in Greek mythology. According to legend, this cave is the well-known cave from Homer’s Odyssey, a work of classical Greek literature.

GOZO

3. TAL- MIXTA CAVE

Tal-Mixta cave is located in the Nadur highlands, high above Ramla Bay (a small village). One of the best things to do in Gozo is to visit the rock, which creates a natural window that offers some of the most breathtaking views of the sea and coastline! Troglodytes are believed to have originally resided in the cave (the ancient cave dwellers). As time went on, the function evolved. Even the Knights of St. John once employed it as a location from which to launch cannons in response to pirate attacks.

4. THE GGANTIJA TEMPLES

When visiting Gozo in Malta, you absolutely must visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site known as the Ggantija Temples. It is believed that these enormous limestone constructions predate the Egyptian pyramids by a considerable margin. The inhabitants believe that only giants could have transported these enormous rocks to this location, which is why they were given the name Ggantija (which means “giant”) This location was reportedly used for fertility rites hundreds of years ago, according to archaeologists and historians who have studied the area.

5. TA’ KOLA WINDMILL

One of the few authentic windmills on the Maltese Island is located close to the Ggantija Temples. Large grinding stones were utilised in the Ta’ Kola Windmill to smash the grain into flour beginning in 1725. The windmill is now a museum where you can see the miller’s workplace and living chambers and see replicas of the furniture.

6. SALT PANS

One of the best things to do in Gozo is to visit the Xwejni Salt Pans, which are located on the north shore. Using the conventional techniques from Roman times, they are still used to extract salt from the sea. You can either come and see this stunning region of the island without taking a tour to learn about the procedure. A sight to remember is looking at the checkerboard salt pans next to the rocky sea.

GOZO

7.CAMINO DAY TRIP

The smallest of Malta’s three islands, Comino, is sandwiched between Malta and Gozo. With untamed nature and a little population, it is wonderfully secluded and picturesque. You may find the flowering plant, which gets its name from cumin, as well as a variety of other wildflowers and plants, all across the island.

Going on a day excursion to Comino and taking in the rocky, untamed scenery is one of the best things to do in Gozo. Since there are no designated roads, you might think you’re the only person on earth.

THINGS TO DO IN CAMINO

BLUE LAGOON

One of the must-see attractions when in Malta is the blue lagoon. It seems very paradisal and is a strong shade of blue. It is one of Malta’s most visited sites, therefore please be aware that it will be highly crowded at the busiest times of year.

CRYSTAL LAGOON

Since the crystal lagoon is less well-known than the blue lagoon, swimming there is a little more tranquil. It’s a little bit rockier and less intensely blue than blue lagoon, but it’s still a lovely site to visit, and its remoteness gives it a very special atmosphere.

SANTA MARIA CAVES

alta truly offers it everything, including beaches reminiscent of Caribbean islands, blue lagoons, and even stunning caverns! The Santa Maria Caves are a well-known snorkelling location and a special place with a variety of aquatic life. Because you have to travel through a cave tunnel from Santa Maria Bay, the route there is also interesting.

THE BEST TIPS TO MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR DIVING VACATION IN GOZO

IS MALTA A GOOD PLACE TO SCUBA DIVE?

The Maltese Islands are a superb location for a diving vacation and provide a wide variety of diving opportunities. Indeed, they are a diver’s heaven.

One of the best and most well-liked diving locations in the Mediterranean can be found in the Maltese Islands, which also include the main island, Gozo, and Comino. Most of Europe can easily travel there, the sea is renowned for being crystal clear, and when you’re not diving, there’s a tonne to see and do on land.

You can find numerous beautiful natural underwater structures, including caverns, arches, tunnels, and chimneys, when you dive in Malta and Gozo. In addition, there are artificial reefs developed on scuttled ships that can be visited.

WHERE ARE GOZO’S BEST DIVE SITES?

Despite being a small island, Gozo provides a wide variety of dive sites, from difficult technical dives for advanced divers to enjoyable and secure shore dives for beginners.

Additionally, Gozo is regarded as one of the top diving locations in Europe and boasts some world-class dive sites that are similar to those in Egypt and the Maldives.

Between Gozo and its smaller sister island Comino, there are about 50 dive sites. Divers with experience and certification can rent gear from one of the many dive shops in Gozo. While divers who want to have fun can book a variety of guided dives.

DWERJA BAY, GOZO

The famed Azure Window was located on the west coast of Gozo until its collapse in March 2017. The region is renowned for its stunning limestone coastline. Under the waves, the limestone landscape is as fascinating and allows for dives as deep as 60 metres.

There are numerous arches and caverns in the vicinity. A 35-meter tunnel that connects to the Inland Sea, a seawater lagoon, is one of the area’s top diving attractions.

BLUE HOLE, GOZO

In order to get to the Blue Hole in Dwerja Bay, one must descend some steps carved out of the rough limestone. It measures around 10 metres in width and 26 metres in depth. One of the best dive locations in Gozo, having a great experience and a tonne of marine life. You can explore a sizable cave at the bottom and exit through an archway onto the ocean.

REQQA POINT, GOZO

Reqqa Point, a peninsula on Gozo’s northern shore, is home to another extremely well-liked dive spot. The location has a parapet at roughly 30 metres and a 60-meter drop off. Life abounds in the nooks of the reef.

CATHEDRAL CAVE

The Cathedral Cave is a spectacular dive location accessible from Wied il-Gasri, halfway between the towns of Ghasri and Marsalforn. It is appropriate for divers of all skill levels. There are several methods to reach the cave, but the majority of them entail swimming underwater and traversing a slope covered with boulders to a big mushroom-shaped cave at a depth of 6 to 18 metres. In fact, you get to the surface beneath the enormous dome, where you may put on your breathing apparatus and start singing due to a tiny window above sea level.

WRECK DIVING AT XATT L-AHMAR, GOZO

Near Marr Harbour on Gozo’s southern shore is a little red sand bay known as Xatt l-Amar. In order to construct artificial reefs for divers to explore, three decommissioned ships were scuttled here at a depth of about 40 metres. These wrecks are accessible from the coast and present experienced divers with a difficult technical dive.

First to be scuttled was the MV Xlendi in 1999. Divers are unable to explore the wreck since it rolled over while being scuttled, making entry impossible. In 2006, the MV Karwela and MV Cominoland were scuttled. Both are upright and swimmable through because no windows or doors are present.

SANTA MARIA CAVES, COMINO

Comino is a little island sandwiched between Malta and Gozo and is encircled by a magnificent blue sea. Perhaps its most well-known feature is the Blue Lagoon, a protected inlet where snorkelling is excellent.

The Santa Maria Caves are made up of a network of caverns that are connected by natural light. You will undoubtedly witness huge shoals of sea bream as well as octopus and grouper, making this trip suitable for divers of all skill levels.

P31 WRECK, COMINO

The P31 wreck, which was scuttled in 2009, makes for a fun dive for divers of all experience levels. The wreck, which was once a patrol boat, is currently located on white sand at a depth of roughly 20 metres. While more experienced divers can go into the wreck to investigate the inside, novice divers can explore the outside of the ship.

WHEN IS GOZO DIVE SEASON?

The good news is that the Maltese Islands provide practically year-round diving. Gozo experiences warm summers and mild winters. Sea surface temperatures range from 16°C in February to 26°C in August.

The best times to reserve a diving vacation on Gozo are in the spring and fall. The sea is often warm at this time of year, averaging around 20 degrees Celsius.

DIALECTS AND LOCAL LANGUAGE OF GOZO

Visitors to Malta and Gozo are frequently taken aback by the Maltese language and strange location names. While some of the letters in our alphabet are comparable to those found in several European languages, we do have certain distinct letters and pronunciations.

This is due to the Maltese language’s historic and multicultural heritage. It is thought to be based on a dialect of Arabic spoken in Sicily and Malta between the 9th and 14th centuries. Sicily finally embraced Italian, whereas the language of Malta evolved into Maltese.

Let us begin with Gozo itself to give you a flavor. Gozo is spelled Gawdex and pronounced Awdessh in Maltese. This is because the G is silent and the x is pronounced shh. Remember to say Arb and Shhara when asking for directions to the villages of Garb or Xagra.

GOZO’S ONE-OF-A-KIND LOCAL CUISINE

One thing that surprises first-time visitors to Gozo is our distinct local cuisine. Our cuisine, like our language, is a distillation of our unique history, with many distinct influences ranging from Arabic to Italian to British.

We enjoy our food on Gozo, and we know you will too. And there is a wide choice of food options available, from small village bakers to cafes and fine dining places.

ACTIVE VILLAGE PIAZZAS

Gozo’s village squares, like those in most Mediterranean countries, are where everyone congregates to socialize, chat, and people-watch.

holiday home

There is generally a local bakery and cafe to make the visit even more enjoyable. You can spend an entire morning sipping coffee and snacking on wonderful pastizzi while enjoying the honey-colored classic buildings and watching the residents go about their daily lives.

If you haven’t been to Gozo in a while, you might be amazed at how vibrant the local piazzas have grown. For many years, visitors preferred the piazzas in Victoria and Xaghra. Many more rural squares now have busy cafes and street sellers.

A fEW IDEAS FOR THINGS TO DO IN GOZO DURING THE WINTER

HIKING

Walking around the island during the winter is a great idea because of the mild sun and generally pleasant weather. After the autumn rains, the countryside is lush and green, with lovely sunrises and sunsets and a slower, quieter, more intimate pace of life. Photographers love the winter’s soft lighting because it makes for perfect conditions.

Check the weather the day before if you intend to go hiking because some of the rocks can become very slippery when it rains. There are numerous nature hikes in Gozo, all of the varying difficulty. There are numerous thorough route maps and descriptions available.

FESTIVALS

Christmas and Carnival are the two main winter festivals. Christmas preparations are best experienced in December during the Advent season, whereas Carnival is usually observed in February or March, just before Ash Wednesday, which ushers in Lent.

CHRISTMAS

A hillside in the Gozo village of Ghajnsielem is transformed into a representation of Bethlehem during the Advent season, complete with market stalls, a barn housing live animals, and even a manager housing the infant Jesus. A young local family acts out the nativity scene. The Adoration of the Magi then concludes the month-long celebration of the feast of the Epiphany, which is observed on the first Sunday following New Year’s Day. The three wise men ride their horses from Malta to Bethlehem, coming from a different place every year.

Additionally, Gozo hosts a variety of tiny neighborhood fairs, Christmas art markets, carol services, and church concerts during the Advent and Christmas seasons.

On Gozo, Christmas offers a chance to enjoy a less commercialized and more genuine holiday away from the crowds.

CARNIVAL

Traditionally, the Carnival season begins right after the Epiphany holiday. However, the Carnival celebrations typically begin in many villages in Malta and Gozo the week before Ash Wednesday and the beginning of the Lenten season. The most well-known Carnival festivities in Gozo take place in the village of Nadur, where there are both unplanned street costume parties and a planned carnival with floats and parades.

SIGHTSEEING

The churches and museums of Gozo are best explored in the winter when it’s more peaceful and you can learn more about the island’s culture and history.

TA PINU
gozo

The Basilica of Ta Pinu is a national shrine that was constructed between 1920 and 1931 on the site of an old chapel dedicated to Our Lady, where a local woman is reputed to have received messages from the Virgin Mary in the 1880s.

The Basilica is a masterpiece of architecture, but you shouldn’t miss the 20 mysteries of the rosary mosaics in the parvis of the shrine, which commemorate the events in Jesus’ and his Mother Mary’s lives. There are 14 stations of the Way of the Cross on the Ta Ghammar hill in front of the basilica, which you can also explore.

XEWKIJA ROTUNDA

The third-highest unsupported dome in all of Europe can be found on the church of St. John the Baptist in the Gozo village of Xewkija. It is situated on top of a smaller, earlier church that was built on the foundations of pagan temples.

gozo
GGANTIJA

The Megalithic temple complex Ggantija in the village of Xaghra is older than the Egyptian pyramids and, after Gobekli Tepe in Turkey, is the second-oldest man-made religious building in the world.

CITTADELLA

A fortress in the middle of the island called the citadel in Victoria was constructed over earlier fortifications during the medieval era. Because it had been rebuilt and rebuilt repeatedly after that, it has many different layers of history. The people of Gozo where required by law to remain within its walls from dusk to dawn up until 1653.

The Citadel is a fascinating place to visit and now houses churches, museums, and historic buildings.

OUR TRANSPORT SERVICE

Your Gozitan adventure begins the moment you step off the plane at Malta’s International Airport. Throughout your stay, our pre-booked taxi service may drive you anywhere, at any time.

AIRPORT TRANSPORT

Just as you’ve coordinated your flights with the availability of your holiday property, one typical but critical question remains.

What is the most cost-effective mode of transportation to my vacation home?

As the person in charge of your family and/or friends, you will need a reliable answer to this question. Our priority coincides with yours. Step outside the airport gate and the hassle will be gone.

PREMIUM DIRECT AIRPORT TRANSFERS

Our driver will meet and greet you at the airport and accompany you all the way to your Gozo accommodation, including on the ferry. This is highly recommended because there will be no luggage handling and because our skilled driver will select the best route for a quick and safe journey.

Car Hire

We chose to work with a Gozo-based car rental firm that is both local and trustworthy. Because all of our holiday homes are located on Malta’s sister island, we do not recommend picking up your car rental at the airport.

Taxi Services

Gozo Self Catering Holiday Homes can bring you to your destination any day and any time you desire, whether you need taxi service or escorted transportation.

BUDGET SPLIT FERRY TRANSFERS

Our vehicle will meet you at the airport and drop you off at the Cirkewwa Malta ferry terminal, where you will board as foot passengers with luggage. Once the ferry arrives on Gozo, another driver will accompany you to your hotel.

GASTRONOMY

We frequently find that customers choose a self-catered trip to commemorate special occasions such as anniversaries, birthdays, hens, and many more. If you are the organizer, you are aware that arranging such an event will take a significant amount of time, and that uncertainties will most likely stay in your mind.

Relax your mind… We are always eager to assist you in answering all of your questions.

However, our experience has taught us that hiring a chef for your special event is an excellent in-house service that is also stress-free. In fact, it is our most popular service, therefore making a reservation in advance is highly encouraged.

Gozo: An island of temples

Clearly, Gozo is a tiny island but extraordinarily rich in history. It’s just enough for you to go on high grounds from any point in Gozo and count all the church domes you can see!
Temples found in Gozo dates back to between 3600 and 3200 BC. The world-renowned Ġgantija Temples, a UNESCO World Heritage site is considered as one of the oldest free-standing monuments in the world, preceding Stonehenge and the Egyptian pyramids. Some of the megaliths of the Ġgantija Temples exceed five metres in length and weigh over fifty tons. Giants were believed to have constructed these prehistoric temples and that is from where the name originates. Entrance to the Ġgantija Temples is from a newly constructed ‘Interpretation Centre’ that provides visitors with the opportunity to explore various aspects related to life in the Neolithic Period. The centre is also home to a selection of the most significant finds discovered at various prehistoric sites in Gozo. A must visit for all prehistoric aficionados, for all of you who are keen to learn more about our rich past and for families who wish to teach personal history lessons to their children in a more realistic and interactive way.
Moving forward to more recent history, whatever your religion or beliefs, the churches of Gozo, 46 in total, are an integral part of the island’s culture and well worth a visit. Some, also have an outstanding history. The churches vary enormously, from seventeenth-century baroque to twentieth-century neoclassical; from small and intimate to one of the largest dome in the world, the Rotunda of St. John the Baptist.
An iconic view of Gozo’s landscape is of course the Gozo Cathedral. A temple in itself. Designed by a renowned Maltese architect Lorenzo Gafà, the Cathedral of Gozo is built entirely from limestone. Constructed between 1697 and 1711, the Baroque style building stands in the form of a Latin cross. Inside, the ceiling cleverly shows a painted masterpiece dating back to 1739 and depicting the ceiling as a dome, confusing many a first-time visitor.
Another famous site, often described as the temple of miracles, is Ta’ Pinu Sanctuary. It attracts visitors worldwide and the story behind it is one that tells of a local lady from the nearby village of Għarb, who in 1883 heard the voice of ‘Our Lady’ depicted in the painting. Adorned with Maltese sculptures and the finest of Maltese stone masonry, the sanctuary that stands today was built between 1920 and 1931.
